Crews worked overnight and all day Tuesday to repair the main at Observer and Madison streets, and the city set up "water buffalos" for residents to stock up.
Schools were closed and Hoboken Hospital evacuated due to the incident, compounding frustrations among residents.
"We haven’t had water most of the day," one resident commented on a tweet from Mayor Ravi Bhalla. "Couple that with schools closed it’s been a rough go."
While Bhalla and Veolia Water NJ tweeted updates all day long, residents were particularly frustrated by the lack of timeline.
"When will this be fixed?" one person tweeted. "Residents need estimates here to plan. Will this take all week?"
"Can anyone just give us a rough estimate on when to expect water back? Should I be stocking up for overnight AGAIN? Or is there hope for some progress today?" another added. "I think everyone can already assume you are 'continuing to work on the problem.'"
